Presidential Debate 2009 Not expecting to surpass 2008's packed calendar which included lighting all of the Presidential and Vice-Presidential Debates, the lighting & control design for the Intrepid Sea-Air-Space Museum, lighting design as well as commissioning of three Carnival Corporation & plc ships, and lighting the Chevy Volt Announcement event, January has started out well for Nautilus Entertainment Design (NED).  Flying from Detroit to Washington DC to Vegas, in a 3 week time period, NED was called upon to design the lighting for two major shows and one historical event.

2009 Presidential Inaugural Ball
Jim Tetlow and Nautilus Entertainment Design were selected as lighting designers for the 2009 inaugural balls and candlelight dinners for the Presidential Inauguration in Washington, D.C.

The project included 12 events in 9 different locations around Washington, D.C. Jim Tetlow is a veteran when it comes to Presidential Inaugurations. Since 1981 he has been contracted for three previous induction festivities. With celebrity hosts and performers, each venue had its own set of criteria and challenges.

"The key to the success of this multi-venue project is finding good teams to work at each location," says Tetlow. "This year we were very fortunate to have a lot of talented LDs, programmers, and electricians.  We were also fortunate to have worked with some great equipment vendors including several local to the Washington market."

The general service contractor for the events was Hargrove Inc. As part of the Hargrove technical team, Nautilus worked with technical director Larry Estrin and sound designer Kelly Epperson.

GM Press Event 2009 NAIAS Nautilus Entertainment Design (NED) was again requested by GM to light their press events and car displays at the 2009 NAIAS.  This year, Chrysler also requested their services to light their press event.

For GM's first press event, it was a road rally and parade of vehicles driving the whole 400 foot length of the GM exhibit. The staging was simple but elegant with multi-color lighting pools and a clean, sharp focus on the vehicles. The on-site LD for the press event was Kurt Doemelt with concept and staging by C4 Communications of Birmingham, Michigan and media content from Aquila Production from New York City.

This is the third year that NED has designed the lighting for the entire GM exhibit. With almost 100 vehicles on display, approximately 1,600 fixtures were used to cover an area twice the size of a football field. The on-site exhibit LD's were staff designer Don Hill and associate designer Tristan Gates.

Chrysler Press Event at 2009 NAIASThe Chrysler press event was also located inside their exhibit that featured three turntables which were constantly fed with new cars driving on and off stage. Alluding to the new all electric products being introduced, over 100 orange electric extension cords were side lit behind a 90 foot backing scrim. The production company was Kaleidoscope
and the on-site LD was Patrick Schulz.

Intel's annual International Sales and Marketing Conference was held in late January at the Venetian Hotel and Sands Convention Center in Las Vegas. The three day event consisted of new product demonstrations and presentations by Intel senior executives and was attended by 3,500 Intel employees from around the world.  This was the fourth time that this event has been produced by John Halloran Associates of Orlando, FL.  The stage lighting design included the use of Vari*Lite automated fixtures and RGB LED lighting built into the scenery.  Jim Tetlow and Kurt Doemelt were onsite for this show.
Next up for the team is the lighting design for the Chrysler Press Event at the Chicago Auto Show, the Hewlett Packard stockholders meeting and the Shoji Tabuchi show in Branson, Missouri.  Work has just begun on the architectural lighting and AV system design for an expansion of the Choctaw Pines Casino near Alexandria, Louisiana for the Jena Tribe of the Choctaw Nation.  Also, four ships are due for delivery this year, Costa Luminosa in April, Costa Pacifica in May, Seabourn Odyssey in June and CCL Dream in September.

Thanks for your time. See you next month.
Sincerely,
Nautilus Entertainment Design
