Ships at Sea
|
In Genoa, Italy on June 5, 2009, a Guinness World Record event occurred with the simultaneous naming ceremony of two ships, the Costa Pacifica and the Costa Luminosa. NED was involved with the designs for all entertainment and broadcast systems including commissioning and inspection services for both ships. Due to the overlapping delivery schedules in April and May, NED's tasks were multiplied as their combined duties included readying 2 LED screens, two large theaters, 2 dance clubs including technical requirements of the other spaces such as atriums, casinos, lounges, bars and control rooms. Costa Luminosa The Costa Luminosa is themed as the ship of light with a distinctive European ambiance. It has 1,130 cabins, 4 restaurants, 11 bars including a disco, and the main pool with retractable roof featuring a 12' X 20' LED screen designed by NED. Seating over 800, the Luminosa also has a theater which is 3 decks high. NED specified and designed all the audio, communications, show lighting and control systems, including mechanical equipment and stage rigging.
Costa Pacifica
The Costa Pacifica has a music theme with every deck and guest area having its own distinctive sound track. With their duties identical to those performed on the Costa Luminosa, NED designed an LED screen used for live feeds, movies and other ship events visible both day and night in addition to specifying and overseeing the installation of all equipment in the 800 seat, 3-deck high Stardust Showroom. |

ms Veendam
Additionally, NED was involved in the renovation of the 1,350 passenger Holland America ms Veendam which re-entered service in March. Originally built in 1996, this ship now boasts a completely overhauled showroom where NED designed a new audio system, upgrades to the lighting system and modifications to the rigging system. NED also designed and oversaw the installation of the giant LED screen for evening movies in the pool area.
Seabourn Odyssey NED is also currently working on the Seabourn Odyssey, which is due to be delivered June 15 in Genova, Italy. This is a small but ultra-luxurious ship, with just 247 suites. NED designed all of the entertainment systems including lighting, audio, and video for the 18 venues including the show lounge, a secondary lounge, dining room, spa, crew and support areas.
On the Horizon Upcoming in September is the delivery of the Carnival Dream, the largest ship ever built by Fincantieri shipyards, weighing in at 130,000 tons, 1,004 feet long carrying 3,652 passengers. Her sister ship, the Carnival Magic again employing NED's professional services, will enter service in 2011. Both ships boast the widest selection of guest experiences of the entire Carnival fleet.

In March, Jim Tetlow created the lighting design for the new Shoji Tabuchi Show in Branson, Missouri. Held in their 2,000 seat theater, Tetlow is entering his 17th year designing for this variety show featuring singer-fiddler Shoji Tabuchi and his company of entertainers including singers, dancers, and musicians. In May, Tetlow was invited by Showlight 2009, held in Glasgow, Scotland, to give a presentation on the challenges of lighting the presidential debates. The Showlight conference occurs every four years and is a unique gathering of lighting professionals from around the world. Work is continuing on the design of the architectural lighting and A/V systems for the expansion of the Choctaw Pines Casino near Alexandria, Louisiana for the Jena Tribe of the Choctaw Nation. Additionally, construction continues on the Choctaw Resort and Casino in Durant, Oklahoma, which is due to open at the end of this year. NED designed the architectural lighting and all of the A/V systems. Thanks for reading. See you next time.
Sincerely,
